hey everybody
currently my big webkinz project has been to manually catalog (almost) every item i own/in my dock, into a big microsoft access database/spreadsheet. there's so many reasons why i want to do this, despite how tedious it is:
here's a screenshot to help show what i mean by all this & what im doing:
ALL these initial entries, where im logging ALL my items at once, are a lot more blank, so that's why they all say unrecorded and stuff. once this database is finished being set up, ill just add in items as i get them & properly fill in the info. for now though, im just getting everything set up.
all "special" category items are ignored, because my special category is so small and i don't really plan to do anything with special category items beyond collect/keep them in most cases. either way, the special category is easy to access in my dock and isn't cluttered, so i currently see no reason to bring it into the database.
right now im working on FOOD items... honestly, i would be happy to not include w-shop food, common prize food (fairy falls/magic mire charms, zum candy, etc), birthday cakes, saved berries from jumbleberry fields, etc... but so far im including EVERYTHING, especially because i don't have a good handle on what is w-shop/common/etc vs what isn't
if anyone is ever interested in doing something like this themselves, i highly recommend including a link to the webkinz picture guide for each item as i have. its a little tedious to do, but luckily the link name is always the same as the item name, so i can type it myself rather than googling it for the link each time. what's so helpful is that when i click on the link, it shows me a picture of the item for better identification of it, but it also shows where that item is mentioned on the webkinz guide website. it makes it really easy to see more information on the item and where it can be found, if it's w-shop or from an event, what specific event or year, etc... so it's a great resource to have available in the future now, when im looking through items.
something im considering doing is adding checkboxes that let me label certain items as desirable. i might need a few, like a checkbox for retired items, estore items, rare items, and the like. but because im so unfamiliar with items, it's really hard for me to identify this. also, i'm MOST concerned about getting the items logged, so i've just been mindlessly adding them without researching the item itself too much. but i wonder if in the future, maybe i could post a few rows of my dock at a time, and ask others to help me identify if any of the items are special in some way, and i can slowly mark them off over time??? that's a future idea, i think.
im curious what others think, though! do you think this is worth doing for the sake of easier searching of my items in the future? i know many of you have played perhaps longer than me and i also know many of you manage several accounts, so i completely get why you wouldn't want to do something like this haha. if you DID do something like this, how would you label special items? are there certain items you always wished you could put in their own category, to find easier? do you wish you could sort furniture by style, color, or theme for example? i'm trying to think of anything i might want myself, so i can start now rather than have to go back in later lol
currently my big webkinz project has been to manually catalog (almost) every item i own/in my dock, into a big microsoft access database/spreadsheet. there's so many reasons why i want to do this, despite how tedious it is:
- it allows me to search for items way easier, rather than painstakingly click through my dock
- i can add additional labels to items and filter my searches that way too: i could hypothetically search for my items that are ONLY tradeable, for example, if i set it up that way & label each item as tradeable or not. i could make up my own category, like all my favorite items, and easily search for those too then
- its a great reference for how, where, why i got an item, because each entry is dated & i plan to include a small note on where the item came from
- my account is from 2007 and im VERY out of touch with what all i even own, what's rare/retired/special or not, etc. so this is kind of my personal way of taking back control over all my things. i really love collecting items and also would like to design more rooms, and i feel like it'll be so much easier for me once this database is set up and ive gone through everything i already own!
