Jellybean Challenge
The goal is to guess the right number of Jelly Beans
Prize:
A Jar of Super Jellybeans.
This is a very rare prize and highly valued in trading communities.
If you feed it to your pet, its health is automatically set to 100%
How to Play:
When you start the game, you see a jar that's partially filled with Jellybeans.
The range of numbers seems to be between 0-10,000
You will get either 3 or 5 guesses.
After entering a guess, you will receive a message telling you how close to the right number you were.
The messages are:
>1000 off: "Wow. That was way off."
500-999 off: "You'll need to be closer."
200-499 off: "Not a bad guess."
1-199 off: "Oooo, That was close."
Strategy:
The messages can help you with your next guess if you use them right. They tell you not only the MAXIMUM amount you were off, but also the MINIMUM.
So, let's say you guess 2500, and get the message "not a bad guess".
This means that the right number must be between 2500+200 and 2500+499 OR 2500-499 and 2500-200.
So you now have two ranges to guess between: 2700-2999 OR 2001-2300.
If you then guess 2800 and get the message "You'll need to be closer", you now know the number is between 2001-2300 because:
"You'll need to be closer" means you're 500-999 away.
2800-500 is 2300
2800-999 is 1801, but recall our first guess showed us that the lowest possible number is 2001.
Similarly, if you get the message "Ooooh. That was close." early on, you know you're within 199 points up or down of the right number.
So if you guessed 1000, the number is between 801-1199. That's still a 400 point range to guess in.
A good strategy here is to guess OUTSIDE of that range, say 800.
If you get another "Ooooh. That was close." you have now narrowed the range to 801-1000.
If you get "Not a bad guess" you have narrowed the range to 1001-1199.
Using these techniques can help you get close, but only luck will win you that precious jar!
