Yeah that's gonna be a no from me dog.
I had a write-up prepared about the questionable ethics of releasing a 100,000 eStore point pet. More specifically the act of doing so multiple times, as a now-annual event. It was ultimately too drawn out, three paragraphs that could be summed up as "this is shady business practice and unethical" - so I am going to leave it purely at that.
There is a term that describes the current situation, it is "fear of missing out" - the act of pressuring consumers to buy a product because they don't know when, or if, it will ever be available again. In this case, we're being outright told it's not coming back to ensure they sell as many as possible. It's manipulative, and Ganz knows this.
Yes, I purchased both the Moonlight Wolf and the Moonlight Tiger. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm not doing this a third time.

First, you must remember, Ganz is a business!!!! If Webkinz World does not make money, it will be shut down! Second, you are in control on how much you choose to spend on this game. I have no fear of missing out, was not even tempted by the other offers of special pets and was thrilled for those who were able to get them. It is just like anything else in life, YOU must be in control of what you do and how you deal with situations. I agree that they go too far at times, like 200.00 for a "rare" pet, but a TON of people paid for those, so kuddos for Ganz for being smart business owners. Will I be getting this pet? YES! I have every bear ever made for Webkinz, that is a collection I choose to continue. I really thought this one was going to be the "one that got away" but my bday is coming up and Hubby said "go for it". Also, I have a friend who is selling me a points code she got 40% off!

MommaBearLas you're the exception. I'm really glad you can keep your collection complete. Would have been sad to have to miss one. Good friend there, and great husband (which you already knew!) Happy early birthday to you!

Yes, that is correct. Ganz needs to make money in order for Webkinz to survive. I've seen one online game close due to lack of funding and am watching another fight to stay alive. However it still raises questions about the ethics of selling you a $100 virtual pet that costs little to nothing to generate. All Webkinz pets, at their core, function the same. The virtual pets are purely cosmetic.
Perhaps my argument was not clear or well-stated. The stance I hold is that Ganz is psychologically manipulating users to want the pet more than they actually do, with the threat of it never being available again. Perhaps not you specifically - you genuinely want a complete bear collection. But many players fall victim to this trap, and of course parents who give in to their children telling them it is never coming back. So the users buy it to ensure they have it. You remember how Disney had their 'Disney Vault' where they removed certain films from sale for years, forcing anyone who didn't pick it up the first time it was available to wait for years before they could own their own copy of the film? It's a lot like that, except in this scenario we're being outright told it won't return. Disney was pressuring consumers to pick something up the first time it's available, because they don't know when their next opportunity to get it will be. It may be smart, sure, but it's anti-consumer and doesn't really sit well with me. With a virtual pet, you aren't even getting anything tangible along with it. It's bad business practice.
I appreciate the opposing view but I simply cannot defend Ganz here, or at least I remain unconvinced.

I am not defending Ganz, I agree it is way too much for pixels. I am just saying that EVERY business does the same thing, we decide whether or not to pay the prices. It is not just Ganz. We live in a world where it is all ME and MY wants (people in general) we want it, so we go in debt for it. NO company forces these items on us. They just know how to market it! From Ganz ,to Walmart, to Kroger and every store in between. It is all about the marketing. They will do it as long as people are buying. If this bear had been any higher or cash, I would have walked away. Would I be sad, yes, but I would live without it. Too many these days will not deny themselves anything, so they cave to the pressure in go into debt up to their eyeballs!
BTW: this is not meant to be an argument or to be directed at you! <3 I just get tired of everyone bashing the eStore on facebook. Yet they never bash the other stores they shop at that do the same thing!

I got last year's pet for my birthday and its very special to me. I do think that people tend to not deny themselves as much as in the past, with everything, not just Webkinz. If I can't afford it, I won't do it, that's just how I am and how I was brought up. It is just pixels but that's what the game is... pixels and I love the game! I've spent a lot of time relaxing, decorating, trading, making all kinds of friends When I consider all those things I've gained, from Webkinz, its definitely been worth it for me. I really try to support the Ganz eStore by purchasing, when I can, because I really want to see the game continue and that seems to be a contribution that I can make.

I also want to see the game continue and we all have the opportunity to either choose to purchase or not for whatever reason is important to us at the time. Webkinz has been important for me, especially meeting all of you here in WT. I enjoy going to the Ganz estore and finding something that makes me smile and in this sometimes crazy world, the positiveness of those pixels can really makes my day.
