Important Update!by webkinzworld As part of an upcoming General Data Protection Regulation that was recently passed by the European Union, we have added a way for our players to easily delete their Webkinz accounts. This was added to ensure the privacy of our players and to continue our commitment to provide a safe and secure place to play online. Note that once an account has been deleted, it will be permanent deleted and players will not have the option to recover any items, pets or currency associated to their account. To delete your Webkinz account please complete the following steps:Log into your Webkinz account at Webkinz.com or from the Webkinz mobile app. Access the Options menu in the top right of the interface, or from the THINGS TO DO menu on the mobile app Click on the Delete Account option. You will be prompted to re-enter your password to confirm your decision You will be given one last chance to cancel or confirm your decision Once confirmed, you will be logged out and your account will be deleted. Again, this decision is permanent and cannot be reversed once completed.
Thanks. -The Webkinz Team

Oh no!! I don't like this either! That's very scary! I would really be worried if I had younger kids. I think they should have made it possible but only with confirmation from the parent email. At least that would provide a little more protection.

This is Steve's reply to my concerns: The option to delete an account has been available in the Parent's Area for several years now. This updated method, making it more visible in the game, is a new mandatory legal requirement as part of the "General Data Protection Regulation" that takes effect this month. Because of other online laws, we also cannot collect an email in association to a child's online account, so we do not have the option to confirm an account deletion via email. Please note that account "hacking" only occurs when someone shares their password, or uses a password that is easily guessed.
My replies to him, so far unanswered: OK, I get this Steve Ganz But there needs to be a safeguard! And I know SEVERAL people who had their accounts hacked WITHOUT sharing their info! It does happen
It needs to stay in the Parent area Steve Ganz

This is, at least in its current state, not a good idea. The deletion process is too simple.
There seems to be some misconception that hacking is only possible if you share your password or pet secret code and anyone who is concerned is "overreacting". For starters, phishing is a real problem and it's not always as obvious as "enter your account information for free infinite Deluxe Membership."
I have seen another forum unrelated to Webkinz that had a code vulnerability in the private messaging system of all things that was exploited by a malicious user and caused the successful hijacking of over a dozen accounts, some of which had been inactive for years. This wasn't even phishing or hacking. Those users did everything right and still lost their accounts. The possibility of something happening to Webkinz World, though unlikely, is very real. To say you are safe as long as you don't do [whatever] is unreasonable. And to say that Webkinz is not a big enough target for us to worry about that? Neither was that forum, and it still happened.
Personally I think if Ganz is going to stick with this method of deleting accounts, they shouldn't let the data be destroyed right away. I used to play an MMORPG where, if you deleted one of your characters, their data was still stored on the servers up to 30 days after deletion. This way, if something did happen to your account, there was a one month grace period to recover it. I think something like this would be smart.

This update makes me furious. I understand why Webkinz needs to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation that was recently passed by the European Union. However, I wish it was harder to delete an account than just entering the password to an account. I feel like there should be a way to recover a deleted account in case someone hacks an account and tries to delete it or someone accidentally enters their information and doesn't realize they will be deleting their Webkinz account for good.
